Mid-South Small Vessel Launch Scout — Target A: Lake Santeetlah
Would You Travel Five Hours to Explore a Lake?
For another ordinary afternoon on the water, probably not.
But Lake Santeetlah is exactly the kind of destination that inspired us to create the Mid-South Small Vessel Launch Scout project.
Located in the mountains of Western North Carolina and surrounded by Nantahala National Forest, Lake Santeetlah offers something very different from the recreational lakes we normally visit around the Triangle.
Mountain water. Forested shoreline. Quiet coves. Islands. Appalachian scenery.
For us, the attraction isn't simply finding another place where we can launch an eFoil, SUP, eFin or other small watercraft.
The question is:
Can the lake itself become the adventure?

Why Lake Santeetlah?
Lake Santeetlah covers roughly 2,800 acres and has approximately 76 miles of shoreline, much of it undeveloped and surrounded by national forest.
That combination immediately caught our attention.
For someone exploring from a small watercraft, a long, natural shoreline changes the experience.
Instead of launching, staying close to the ramp and riding the same stretch of water, imagine beginning the morning with a destination.
Follow a forested shoreline.
Round the next point.
Explore a quiet cove.
Ride around an island.
Stop somewhere beautiful.
Then continue toward another part of the lake.
Suddenly, you're not simply riding.
You're traveling.

What Could an eFoil Ride Here Feel Like?
This is what makes Santeetlah especially interesting to us.
An eFoil can cover water very differently from a traditional paddle craft. That creates the possibility of connecting multiple scenic areas into one continuous lake journey.
The mountains become the background.
Points and islands become waypoints.
Coves become places to explore.
And the launch becomes only the beginning and end of the adventure.
We don't know yet which routes will actually work best.
That's exactly why Santeetlah is a Scout Target.

What Will the O-Team Scout?
Lake Santeetlah is officially Target A of our first six Mid-South Small Vessel Launch Scout destinations.
When our Scout team visits, we'll be looking beyond whether we can simply launch and ride.
We want to understand:
Launch access and practical setup
Water and riding conditions
Potential hazards
Useful range and route options
Scenic sections of shoreline
Islands, coves and potential stopping areas
Possible emergency access
Logistics for a weekend visit
And most importantly:
Is the experience actually worth traveling several hours for?
A beautiful photograph can put a lake on our list.
Only going there can tell us whether it belongs on an expedition.
One Main Target at a Time
Our Scout philosophy is deliberately simple.
Each trip has one Main Target.
We would rather spend enough time understanding one lake than rush through several just to check them off a list.
If conditions, distance and time allow, we may also visit the next Scout Target for a short Pre-Scout before returning home.
But that's optional.
One lake properly explored is already a successful mission.
From Scout Target to Community Adventure
The O-Team Scout project isn't only about finding new places for ourselves.
Every launch we verify, route we test, hazard we identify and scenic destination we discover can help the riders who come after us.
Our longer-term vision is to use that knowledge to develop:
TARHEEL LAKES eFOIL EXPEDITION
RIDE • EXPLORE • CONNECT
This isn't intended to be a race or tournament.
We envision it as a series of community exploration rides over a period of time, connecting eFoiling with some of the most memorable lake scenery in the Carolinas.
Riders could join one destination, several destinations, or eventually experience the complete series.
The achievement isn't being the fastest.
It's reaching somewhere memorable together.
Target A Is Only the Beginning
Lake Santeetlah is the first of six destinations we're introducing.
Target A gives us remote mountain scenery and miles of forested shoreline.
Targets B through F will bring very different reasons to travel—from high-mountain water and expansive Blue Ridge views to waterfalls and some extraordinary lake landscapes.
We'll introduce each destination individually before the Scout missions begin.
Then we'll go find out whether reality lives up to the pictures.
Six Scout Targets.
Six different adventures.
One lake at a time.
