How to Fall Safely on an eFoil (And Why Beginners Should Jump Early)

🟠 The Most Important Skill No One Talks About

When people think about learning eFoiling, they think about:

  • standing up

  • controlling speed

  • making turns

But in the early stage, none of these is the most important.

The most important skill is:

👉 how to fall

Not how to ride. Not how to perform.

But how to fall safely, early, and with control.

🟠 Why Falling Is Different on an eFoil

An eFoil is not just a board on the surface.

Under the water, there is:

  • a mast

  • a fuselage

  • a hydrofoil wing

👉 which means:

there is structure below you when you fall

This makes falling a technical skill, not just a reaction.

🟠 The Beginner Risk

Beginners don’t fall because they are careless.

They fall because:

  • they hesitate

  • they freeze

  • they react too late

And when they do fall:

  • their body becomes stiff

  • their direction becomes unpredictable

  • they stay too close to the board

👉 This is where risk increases

🟠 The Big Orange Rule

Early Exit Protocol

“If it feels wrong, you’re already out.”

🟠 Why We Teach This First

In the early stage, riders do not yet have:

  • fall experience

  • recovery timing

  • control under instability

So instead of teaching them to “save it,” we teach them to:

👉 exit early

Because:

late decisions create bad falls

🟠 What “Jump Early” Really Means

It does not mean panic.

It does not mean giving up.

It means:

  • recognizing instability early

  • making a clear decision

  • leaving the board before things escalate

👉 controlled exit is always safer than uncontrolled fall

🟠 The Correct Way to Fall

When you fall, your goal is not to “save the ride.”

Your goal is:

👉 to separate from the board

🟠 Key Principles

  • stay relatively upright before exit

  • avoid folding forward (no Shrimp Reflex)

  • step or jump away from the board

  • create distance immediately

Often, this is as simple as:

👉 a small push or kick to send the board in the opposite direction

🟠 What NOT to Do

  • don’t hesitate too long

  • don’t try to recover when you are not ready

  • don’t fall toward the board

  • don’t curl into the Shrimp Reflex

Because:

hesitation turns small problems into dangerous situations

🟠 Risk Changes With Skill Level

One of the most important truths in eFoiling is this:

Danger does not disappear as you improve. It changes.

At Big Orange, we match safety to each stage.

🟠 For New Riders — Remove the Biggest Risks First

For beginners, the main risks come from:

  • unpredictable falls

  • lack of control

  • poor body positioning

🟠 Propeller Risk (Most Serious)

Across all levels, the most dangerous threat is:

👉 propeller contact

At Big Orange:

We only use jet-powered eFoils for newcomers.

This eliminates the highest-risk factor entirely.

🟠 Board Impact Risk (Ribs & Torso)

Beginners—especially those with the Shrimp Reflex—often:

  • curl forward

  • fall toward the board

  • expose ribs and torso

Hard boards can cause:

👉 rib injuries👉 heavy impact

So at Big Orange:

We use inflatable boards for beginners.

This reduces impact risk significantly.

🟠 Foil System (Mast, Fuselage, Wing)

Even with safer equipment, the foil structure remains.

That’s why:

Helmet use is mandatory at Big Orange.

Because safety is not one solution.

It is a system.

🟠 For Intermediate Riders — The Mast Becomes the Risk

As riders improve:

  • they ride higher

  • they ride faster

  • they begin exploring dynamic water

At this stage:

👉 the mast becomes the primary danger

🟠 The Critical Rule

“Never fall in front of the board.”

🟠 Why This Matters (Wave Scenario)

When riding waves:

  • the wave pushes the board forward

  • the rider may fall into its path

👉 the board comes toward you👉 the mast follows

As you described:

“The wave you ride will push the board toward you.”

This is why:

“Fall away. Never fall in front.” ⭐

🟠 For Advanced Riders — Risk Becomes Exposure

At higher levels:

  • riders move with the wave

  • control becomes instinctive

But risk still exists.

🟠 The Real Risk

Not skill.

But:

  • environment

  • speed

  • unpredictability

🟠 The Honest Truth

At the expert level, preparation matters more than technique.

Including:

  • proper gear

  • awareness

  • and yes—proper insurance

🟠 Why We Train Falling First

At Big Orange, before real progression, we train:

👉 falling

Not performance.Not tricks.

But:

  • how to exit early

  • how to fall safely

  • how to build confidence

🟠 What This Changes

Once riders understand falling:

  • fear decreases

  • hesitation disappears

  • decisions become clearer

And most importantly:

👉 they relax on the board

🟠 The Progression

🟠 Stage 1 — Exit Early

“If it feels wrong, you’re out.”

🟢 Stage 2 — Pause & Feel

“Not every wobble is a fall.”

🔵 Stage 3 — Recover

“Stay. Adjust. Continue.”

🟠 The Big Orange Philosophy

“First, learn to fall safely. Then, learn not to fall.” ⭐

🟠 What Comes Next

Once you understand:

  • speed

  • instability

  • falling

You are ready to see the full system.
