What Is an eFoil?

The Closest Feeling to Flying on Water

Imagine standing on a surfboard that quietly rises above the surface of the lake.

The sound of waves disappears.

Water resistance almost vanishes.

Instead of riding through the water, you're now gliding above it.

That is the experience of riding an eFoil.

An eFoil combines an electric motor, a rechargeable battery, and an underwater hydrofoil wing to lift the board completely above the water's surface. Once the board reaches sufficient speed, the hydrofoil generates lift, allowing the rider to "fly" smoothly above the lake.

It feels less like riding a board and more like floating through the air.

How Does an eFoil Work?

Although the sensation feels futuristic, the concept is surprisingly simple.

An eFoil has five primary components.

Floating Board

The board provides stability while starting and stopping.

When stationary, it floats much like a traditional surfboard.

During takeoff, it serves as the platform from which the hydrofoil lifts.

Hydrofoil Wing

Mounted beneath the board on a long mast, the hydrofoil wing functions similarly to an airplane wing underwater.

As speed increases, water flowing over the wing creates lift.

Eventually, the entire board rises above the surface.

Only the mast and wing remain in the water.

This dramatically reduces drag, creating the smooth, silent sensation that makes eFoiling unique.

Electric Motor

A quiet electric motor mounted behind the hydrofoil provides continuous power.

Unlike wakeboarding or surfing, there is no boat, rope, or wave required.

You simply control your own speed while exploring wherever the water takes you.

Rechargeable Battery

A waterproof lithium battery powers the system.

Depending on riding style and battery size, one charge typically provides enough riding time for a complete lesson or recreational session.

Wireless Controller

A handheld wireless controller allows riders to smoothly adjust speed throughout the ride.

As confidence improves, riders naturally learn to coordinate speed, balance, and body position to achieve stable flight.

Why Does It Feel Like Flying?

The magic comes from the hydrofoil.

Traditional boards push through the water.

Water creates resistance.

Resistance creates drag.

An eFoil is different.

Once airborne, nearly the entire board leaves the water.

Only the thin mast and underwater wing remain submerged.

With dramatically less drag, the ride becomes incredibly smooth and quiet.

Many riders describe the feeling as:

Flying only a few feet above the lake.

It is unlike almost any other water sport.

Is eFoiling Difficult?

It is more approachable than most people expect.

The challenge is not strength.

It is balance.

Most beginners don't struggle because the board is heavy or fast.

They struggle because they have never experienced balancing on a hydrofoil before.

Fortunately, balance can be learned.

That's exactly why Big Orange developed the FlowSync™ Learning System.

Instead of asking students to immediately fly above the water, we build confidence step by step.

Every milestone prepares riders for the next.

Our goal isn't simply to get students airborne.

Our goal is to help them become safe, confident, and independent riders.

Meet FlowSync™

FlowSync™ is Big Orange's structured learning philosophy for teaching eFoiling.

Rather than relying on trial and error, FlowSync™ breaks the learning process into manageable milestones that gradually build confidence.

The journey includes:

  • Safety Sync

  • Balance Sync

  • Fall Sync

  • Control Sync

  • Orange Qualification

Each stage develops a different skill while keeping the learning experience enjoyable and safe.

Many students discover that learning to eFoil is just as rewarding as flying itself.

Is eFoiling Safe?

Like any outdoor sport, eFoiling requires proper instruction and responsible decision-making.

Safety is the foundation of every Big Orange lesson.

Before anyone attempts flight, participants receive instruction on:

  • Equipment familiarization

  • Safe body positioning

  • Speed management

  • Falling safely

  • Emergency procedures

  • Respecting other lake users

  • Understanding weather and water conditions

Every lesson includes professional safety equipment, close instructor supervision, and carefully selected learning locations with calm water.

Who Can Learn?

Many people assume eFoiling is only for surfers or elite athletes.

That simply isn't true.

Successful students come from many different backgrounds.

Our participants include:

  • Complete beginners

  • Paddleboard enthusiasts

  • Families

  • Outdoor adventurers

  • Engineers and technology enthusiasts

  • Photographers

  • Professionals looking for a new challenge

  • Active retirees

  • Anyone willing to learn patiently

You don't need previous surfing experience.

You don't need wakeboarding experience.

You simply need curiosity and a willingness to learn.

Why Learn at Big Orange?

Learning eFoiling is about much more than standing up.

At Big Orange, we focus on understanding how people learn.

Our lessons emphasize:

  • Structured progress instead of guesswork

  • Small learning milestones

  • Personalized coaching

  • Calm, supportive instruction

  • Safe learning environments

  • Long-term confidence

We believe every rider progresses at a different pace.

Our instructors adapt the lesson to the individual—not the other way around.

Electric Propulsion or eFoil?

If you're completely new to electric water sports, you may wonder where to begin.

We generally recommend:

Electric Propulsion

Perfect for:

  • Relaxation

  • Scenic exploration

  • Wildlife observation

  • Family adventures

  • Photography

  • Fishing

  • First-time visitors

eFoil

Perfect for:

  • Learning a new skill

  • Personal challenge

  • Flying above the water

  • Technical progression

  • FlowSync™ training

  • Adventure seekers

Many riders enjoy both experiences.

Electric propulsion builds comfort on the water.

FlowSync™ then helps transform that confidence into controlled flight.

The Future of Water Sports

eFoiling is still one of the newest forms of outdoor recreation.

Every year, more people discover the incredible feeling of flying silently across lakes, rivers, and coastlines.

At Big Orange, we believe the future of eFoiling isn't simply faster boards or bigger batteries.

The future lies in making the sport safer, more accessible, and more enjoyable for everyone.

That's why we created FlowSync™.

Not to teach people how to go faster—

but to help them discover the joy of flight with confidence.
