🍊 Discovery Wednesday

The Route Surveyor Program

Every great exploration movement begins with a simple habit: going out and discovering what lies beyond the next shoreline.

At Big Orange, that habit takes place every week through a program known as Discovery Wednesday.

Discovery Wednesday is not a class and not a competition. It is a quiet tradition where riders explore lakes and waterways to better understand the region’s water landscape.

Participants in this program are known as Route Surveyors.

Exploration as a Practice

Many riders enjoy familiar waters. The same shoreline. The same launch ramp.

Route Surveyors do something different.

They travel to lakes they have never ridden before.

They observe the wind patterns, the shoreline shape, and the calm zones of the water.

They look for:

• safe launch points

• quiet riding corridors

• scenic routes across the lake

• areas where beginners can learn safely

Every discovery adds another piece of knowledge to the Big Orange exploration map.

Learning the Water

Each lake behaves differently.

Some lakes are surrounded by forested hills that protect the water from wind.

Others are wide open reservoirs where conditions change quickly.

Discovery Wednesday helps riders learn how to read these environments.

Route Surveyors gradually develop a deep understanding of:

• wind patterns

• shoreline geography

• safe riding zones

• local boating activity

• seasonal water conditions

This knowledge helps make future rides safer and more enjoyable for the entire community.

Small Teams, Quiet Exploration

Discovery Wednesday rides are intentionally small.

Typically only a handful of riders participate in a route survey.

This allows the group to move slowly and observe the water carefully.

A typical exploration day may include:

• early morning launch

• a calm-water survey ride

• shoreline observations

• lunch at a waterfront partner location

• notes about the lake for future riders

The goal is not speed or distance.

The goal is understanding the water.

Mapping the Lakes

Every Discovery Wednesday ride contributes to a larger vision: mapping the lakes of the Mid-South region for future explorers.

Route Surveyors share their observations with the Big Orange community, gradually building a practical map of riding knowledge.

Over time this growing map becomes a guide to the region’s best exploration waters.

This effort connects directly to a larger initiative known as the Mid-South 100 Waters Project.

Becoming a Route Surveyor

Route Surveyors are not defined by skill level alone.

They are defined by curiosity.

Many of the best surveyors are simply riders who enjoy exploring new places and paying attention to the details of the water.

Anyone who joins Discovery Wednesday becomes part of the quiet work of discovery that expands the Big Orange exploration network.

Because every lake has a story waiting to be discovered.
