Jordan Lake's Best Free Launch Point
Jordan Lake has many excellent recreation areas, but few combine convenience, accessibility, and freedom as effectively as Farrington Point.
Located on the northern side of Jordan Lake near Chapel Hill and Durham, Farrington Point has quietly become one of our favorite launch locations during the Big Orange Jordan Lake Scout Series.
Unlike many recreation areas around the lake, Farrington Point offers free public access, a large boat ramp, ample parking, and quick access to open water without passing through state park entrance gates.
For frequent riders, paddlers, anglers, and explorers, that simplicity matters.

Why Farrington Point Stands Out
Many Jordan Lake recreation areas are designed around beaches, swimming areas, picnic shelters, and family recreation.
Farrington Point is different.
This location is designed around getting people onto the water quickly and efficiently.
There is no beach.
There are no large recreation facilities.
There are no entrance fees.
Instead, Farrington Point offers exactly what many riders and paddlers want:
Easy access to Jordan Lake.
Location & Access
One of Farrington Point's greatest strengths is convenience.
The location sits within reasonable driving distance of:
Chapel Hill
Durham
Cary
Apex
Pittsboro
For community events and group meetups, it may be one of the most practical gathering locations anywhere around Jordan Lake.
Parking is straightforward and the launch area is large enough to accommodate a variety of watercraft.
Launch Conditions
The boat ramp provides easy access to the lake and allows visitors to launch quickly.
Compared with some beach launches around Jordan Lake, there is less need to carry equipment long distances.
For larger boards and equipment systems, this can significantly simplify setup and launch procedures.
Suitable For
Paddle Boards
Electric Propulsion Boards
Kayaks
Canoes
Fishing Boats
Registered eFoils
Water Conditions
During scouting visits, Farrington Point provided quick access to open water and large exploration areas.
The surrounding water allows riders to move away from shoreline traffic relatively quickly while still remaining within a protected portion of Jordan Lake.
Water conditions naturally vary with weather and lake levels, but overall the location offers excellent room for exploration.
Detailed water-condition observations and navigation notes will be added after launch testing.
Morning & Sunrise Potential
One aspect we are continuing to evaluate is Farrington Point's sunrise potential.
Unlike many recreation areas around Jordan Lake, Farrington Point does not operate behind a gated state park entrance.
This means visitors can potentially access the launch area before sunrise.
While we have not yet completed formal sunrise testing, Farrington Point currently appears to be one of the most promising locations for early-morning access around Jordan Lake.
Future scout missions will document:
Sunrise visibility
Morning water conditions
Photography opportunities
Wildlife activity
First-light launch experience
If field testing confirms our observations, Farrington Point may become our top recommendation for sunrise-access launches.
Community Event Potential
This is where Farrington Point may truly shine.
The combination of:
Free access
Convenient location
Easy parking
Large launch area
Open-water access
makes it one of the most practical locations for:
Community paddle events
Exploration rides
Equipment demonstrations
University outdoor recreation activities
Group meetups
Beginner introduction sessions
For these reasons, Farrington Point has become a leading candidate for future Big Orange community events.
Upcoming activities may include:
UNC Outdoor Recreation Visit
Community Exploration Rides
Equipment Testing Sessions
Sunrise Exploration Events
Fishing & Wildlife
Farrington Point is also popular with anglers.
Visitors frequently use the area for fishing access and wildlife observation.
Early morning and evening hours often provide the most peaceful experience.
Bird activity can be particularly enjoyable during quieter periods of the day.
Additional wildlife observations will be added during launch testing.
Big Orange Notes
After scouting multiple Jordan Lake access points, Farrington Point consistently stands out as the most practical launch location.
It may not offer the beach atmosphere of Ebenezer or the morning scenery of Vista Point, but it delivers something equally valuable:
Convenience.
This is the launch point many local riders will return to again and again.
For Big Orange, Farrington Point may become the operational center of future Jordan Lake community activities.
