The Origin of eFoil: Where Electric Foiling Comes From

Updated: Mar 11

eFoil did not appear overnight. It did not start as a trend.

It came from engineering, water sports, and one clear goal:

Fly above water with less resistance.

This is the full history of eFoil — told simply.

Before eFoil, There Was the Hydrofoil

Water creates drag. Drag slows everything down.

Engineers knew this early on. So they tried something smart.

They added a wing under the water.

When speed increases:

  • The wing creates lift

  • The board rises

  • Less board touches water

  • Drag drops

This is the hydrofoil.

Even Alexander Graham Bell tested hydrofoil boats more than 100 years ago. The idea worked.

The technology was not yet ready.

Foiling Enters Surfing

Decades later, surfers tried hydrofoils.

They put a foil under a surfboard. They caught small waves. They stayed above the water.

The feeling was new:

  • Silent

  • Smooth

  • Long glide

But foiling had limits.

You still needed:

  • Waves

  • Or a tow boat

  • Or strong wind

Foiling was exciting — but not easy.

Electricity Changed Everything

Battery technology improved. Electric motors got smaller. Controllers became precise.

Then came the key idea:

What if the foil powers itself?

This created the eFoil.

An electric motor was added to the mast. A battery was placed inside the board. A hand controller controls speed.

Now riders could:

  • Take off without waves

  • Ride on flat water

  • Learn faster

  • Ride longer

eFoil became a real sport.

Why Lakes Changed the Sport

The ocean is powerful. But it is also unpredictable.

The sea has her own temperament.

Waves change.Wind shifts.Currents pull.

Lakes are different:

  • Flat water

  • No breaking waves

  • No strong currents

  • More control

This changed learning completely.

That’s why:

  • Most beginners succeed on lakes

  • Schools prefer calm water

  • Progress is faster and safer

eFoil was no longer only for experts. It became something regular people could learn.

From Niche Experiment to Global Sport

Once learning became easier, growth followed.

Today:

  • eFoil schools operate worldwide

  • Families ride together

  • Older riders learn in days

  • Calm water locations lead the industry

Manufacturers shifted focus.

They started designing boards for:

  • Stability

  • Safety

  • Easy takeoff

  • Predictable control

Modern eFoil design was born.

Why eFoil History Still Matters

Understanding the history explains a lot.

It explains:

  • Why board size matters

  • Why foil shape matters

  • Why calm water is ideal for beginners

  • Why school boards look different from pro boards

eFoiling is not about tricks first. It is about control first.

That lesson comes straight from history.

What’s Next

Now you know where eFoil comes from.

The next question is simple:

Who builds today’s eFoil boards — and why are they different?

That’s where the modern market begins.
