A Different Kind of Water Experience
In most water sports environments, the structure is straightforward and familiar. You arrive at the location, meet an instructor, receive step-by-step instructions, and then begin practicing with the goal of improving performance.
This model is effective. It helps people learn quickly and build technical skills.
However, at Big Orange, we intentionally chose a different approach.
We are not structured as a school, and our sessions are not designed as traditional lessons.
At Big Orange, we don’t have coaches. We have Guides.

Why Not Coaches?
Coaching, by definition, focuses on performance outcomes. It emphasizes measurable progress—standing up faster, improving technique, achieving better control, and reaching higher levels of efficiency.
While this approach works well in many sports, it does not fully align with the nature of eFoiling—especially in calm inland waters.
Efoiling is not only a physical activity. It is also a sensory and emotional experience.
Riders often remember:
the first moment the board lifts above the water
the quiet glide across a still lake
the subtle balance between control and letting go
These experiences cannot be rushed, and they cannot be forced through instruction alone.
For this reason, a traditional coaching model can sometimes introduce unnecessary pressure and reduce the natural learning rhythm that eFoiling requires.
The Role of a Guide
A Guide at Big Orange is not an authority figure, but an experienced participant in the same journey.
Guides are riders who have:
gone through the learning process themselves
experienced repeated falls and gradual improvement
developed a practical understanding of how to move with the water
Their role is simple and intentional:
They ride with you.
They do not position themselves ahead of you or above you. Instead, they stay alongside you, providing support when needed while allowing space for personal discovery.
In practice, this means Guides:
offer concise, well-timed suggestions rather than constant instruction
help maintain a safe and controlled environment
allow riders to develop their own balance and confidence
This approach creates a more natural and less pressured learning experience.
Not Just Skill — A Lifestyle
At Big Orange, learning to ride is only the first step.
What follows is equally important:
exploring different lakes and waterways
experiencing sunrise and sunset rides
sharing time on the water with friends and family
becoming part of an active and supportive community
Because of this, our focus extends beyond skill acquisition.
People don’t come to Big Orange to be trained. They come to become riders.
Community Over Instruction
Another key difference is where our Guides come from.
They are not external instructors hired solely to deliver lessons. Instead, they are members of the Big Orange community who have progressed through the system themselves.
They include riders from:
Team Orange
Team Pomelo
Team Durian
These individuals have chosen to stay, continue riding, and contribute back to the community.
As a result, the environment shifts from a service-based model to a community-driven one:
interactions feel more natural and less transactional
riders support each other, not just rely on a single instructor
progression happens within a shared culture rather than a formal curriculum
Learning Through Experience
The Big Orange approach is based on a simple principle:
the water teaches
the equipment responds
the rider learns
Guides are present to support this process, not to control it.
Their responsibilities are to:
ensure safety standards are maintained
provide direction when necessary
assist riders during moments of difficulty
encourage continued effort after setbacks
This allows learning to happen through direct experience, which is often more lasting and meaningful than instruction alone.
The Big Orange Way
Big Orange is built around a different philosophy from traditional water sports schools.
We do not rely on:
formal coaching structures
classroom-style instruction
rigid progression systems
Instead, we focus on:
Guides who ride alongside you
a community that supports you
and an environment that allows you to grow naturally
All grounded in one simple idea:
Fall. Rise. Foil.
Conclusion
Big Orange is not designed to produce students who complete a course and move on.
It is designed to support individuals as they enter and grow within a lifestyle centered around water, exploration, and community.
At Big Orange, we don’t create students. We grow riders.
