Learning to Fly Above the Water, One Step at a Time
At Big Orange, learning to ride an electric hydrofoil is a journey of steady progress.Every rider starts from the same place — curious, excited, and usually a little unsure.
The key to success is patient progression. Riders learn step by step, gaining confidence and balance before moving to the next stage.
Our goal is simple:help riders enjoy the experience while building skills naturally and safely.
Step 1 — Getting Comfortable on the Board
For most beginners, the first challenge is simply becoming familiar with the board and remote.
At this stage riders practice:
• board balance and body posture
• basic throttle control
• smooth starts and stops
Riders may begin kneeling or standing, depending on their comfort level. The focus is not speed — it is stability and awareness.

Step 2 — Stable Surface Riding
Once riders become comfortable with the board, they begin riding steadily on the water surface.
During this stage riders learn to:
• maintain balance while moving
• control speed smoothly
• ride in a straight and stable line
This stage builds the foundation of control needed before lifting onto the foil.

Step 3 — First Lift
The first moment when the board rises above the water is often the most memorable.
Riders begin learning how to:
• shift weight smoothly
• control lift and height
• maintain balance while foiling
Early flights are usually short — just a few seconds — but each attempt builds confidence and understanding of the board.

Step 4 — Controlled Flight
As riders gain experience, they begin gliding smoothly above the water.
At this stage riders can:
• maintain steady hydrofoil flight
• ride longer distances
• control small turns and direction
This is when riders truly experience the unique feeling of silent flight above the water.
Step 5 — Confidence and Exploration
Once riders feel comfortable on the foil, the focus shifts from learning to enjoyment and exploration.
Riders may begin to:
• ride longer sessions
• explore different lakes and waterways
• participate in group rides and discovery sessions
At this stage, eFoiling becomes more than a skill — it becomes a way to experience the water and the outdoors.
Progress Comes Naturally
Every rider progresses at a different pace, and there is no rush.
Some riders may reach stable flight in a single session, while others take several rides to build their confidence. Both paths are completely normal.
At Big Orange, we believe the most important thing is to enjoy the learning process.
Because every rider eventually experiences the same moment:
when the board lifts, the water becomes quiet, and you realize you are flying.
